Gary James Mahnke

Mahnke — Gary James, age 75, died on June 19th, 2017 at Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak, Michigan after a two year plus battle with Leukemia. He is survived by his ex-wife: Frances, two sons: Doug (Vicky) and Don (Jenny), along with three grandchildren: Gabrielle, Noah and Olive Mahnke. Also his sister Joyce (Dennis) Cummings and nieces and nephews: Renee, Michael, Mark, Kim and Matthew (Cummings) and Sandra (Magryta). His parents: Clarence and Gertrude Mahnke are deceased, along with his sister: Charlotte and spouse: Roland (Eddie) Magryta.

Gary grew up in Detroit, and was raised Roman Catholic. He was a Proud Veteran of the Vietnam War and was discharged with Honors. To follow, he had a successful and fulfilling career at Northwest Airlines working in Ground Service for forty-two years. He retired, and took a position at the Hazel Park Raceway in the security department for his remaining years. His greatest loves were his two sons and three grandchildren. He also had extremely fond memories of his time at the airline, and the racetrack, where he made lifelong friendships. He liked to bowl in his earlier years, and enjoyed a quiet, modest lifestyle. A loyal friend, and a keen gambler, Gary was generous and thoughtful. He told me to always ask people about themselves, and be sure to listen. Most people think of themselves, but he always thought of others first.

Gary will be cremated and his memorial service will be at the Hazel Park Raceway in the Paddock Party Suites area on July 8th, 2017 at 4pm. Children are welcome. Dinner will be provided, and a cash bar will be available. The ashes will be placed in the Memorial Wall at the Great Lakes National Cemetery for Veterans in Holly, Michigan with Military Funeral Honors on July 28th, 2017 at 2pm.

Please consider making a donation in lieu of flowers, payable to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
