Joan Guyman

Joan Irene Guyman
May 9, 1928 – August 15, 2017

Joan Guyman, age 89, passed away August 15th due to illness. She was
diagnosed with cancer a year prior and died with her family by her
side.

Family and love and having a positive outlook were very important to Joan.

She truly loved her late husband, Hugh, their children Keith and Lisa,
grandchildren Cassandra, Kelly, Paige and Carson and their mother Dawn
Guyman.

Joan was born in Cleveland, Ohio on May 9, 1928 to Robert and Vera Mish.
Her loving brother, Robert, was born five years later and died in 1993.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Wayne State University. Joan
then created a job for herself at the Hudson’s department store
because in her eyes there was ample room for improvement.. The
department manager decided to give her a shot. Not too long afterwards
Joan was flying to New York as a buyer for the downtown Hudson’s
Department store.

In the early fifties she met a handsome man that she adored, that
lucky guy being Hugh Guyman an aspiring engineer at General Motors,
having similar feelings asked my mom to marry him and in 1956 they
tied the knot. In 1960 they had a son Keith, and in 1965 Lisa was
born.

Joan’s second career which spanned over forty years was in residential
real estate at Real Estate One. She took great pride and joy in
helping her clients.

As a hobby she enjoyed creating crafts inspired by nature. She sold
her wares at craft shows until the age of 87. She also loved to travel
and explore new things.

As with many things in her life Joan beat the odds. She was a survivor
breast cancer in 1969 and then again in 2005. In the summer of 2016
she was diagnosed with cancer and the doctor said six months would be
“very optimistic’ and she enjoyed another full year of life. She died
peacefully at 89 years old in the presence of her children.

Above all, Joan was truly grateful for her happy marriage of 44 years,
her family, friends and coffee. She will be missed and will live on in
our hearts and minds.

Memorial Service Saturday, August 26th at 11 a.m. at the First
Presbyterian Church, 1669 W. Maple Rd., Birmingham, MI 48009.
