Tyrone Benjamin Miller

Tyrone Benjamin Miller was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on June 7, 1946, to Maxine Miller and Willie Tart. After a courageous battle with COVID 19, he peacefully passed away on April 19, 2020.

Tyrone attended Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Northern High School. He attended Macomb Community College and Wayne State University. He was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War and admirably served, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service and Campaign Medal. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he held several short-term jobs before he began working for American Standard Corporation. He attained the position of Materials Manager. After working there about 20 years, the company relocated out of state. He subsequently began working for the Detroit Transportation Corporation (People Mover) as a Materials Manager. He worked there 17 years and retired in 2008.

Tyrone thoroughly enjoyed spending quiet time with his wife Verna, traveling, family dinners, holiday gatherings, picnics and a good political or sports debate. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. They were the joy of his life and brought a smile to his soul. When not spending time with family, Tyrone could be found on the sofa watching sports on TV. He loved the Michigan teams both professional and collegiate. His favorite sports were football, basketball, baseball, and golf. However, he would even watch soccer, bowling or tennis if his favorite sports were unavailable on TV.

He was loved by everyone who knew him because of his compassionate and gentle spirit. He found good in everyone no matter the circumstances.

Tyrone leaves to mourn his passing and to cherish his memory, his beloved wife Verna, his Stepmother Atha Logan; Children, Christopher Miller (Denise), Jon Campbell (Sabrina) , Gail Campbell, Samantha Miller and Kristin Miller; Grand Children, DeVante, Trint, Kaiana (Sean), Khadijah, Taylor, Ariyana, Kennedy, Jayden, Langston, Jon Jr., Saborn, Joshua, McHale, McKenzie, James and Justin; Great Grand Children TiYania, Amari, Allen, Ayiden, MiAngel, Alaynah, Asher and Karson. Sister Cheryl Washington, Brother Maurice Tart, Special Aunts Erma Crowder and Evelyn Palmer, a host of other beloved relatives and lifelong friends.

And from Jon Campbell:
It’s not hard fathering children, but to step in and be a father when a child is fatherless makes a Man! We lost that Father who me and my Sister affectionately called Papa Ty “Tyrone B. Miller”.

Papa Ty came into my life when I was about 12 years old. He was a Godsend! The support he brought made a stable home. He was a true spirit of joy and happiness. I never saw him upset, except about the LIONS. The challenges in life always worked itself out with Papa Ty.

Papa Ty thank you for bringing love and happiness into my Mom’s life for 38 years.
God knows I’m thankful for having you in my life. I would not be the man I am today without you.
Papa Ty, you rest in peace and with much love!

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Please keep the family in your prayers.
