James “Jim” Walter Lyle

James Walter Lyle, born March 28, 1935 in Imlay City, Michigan to Irvin Charles Lyle and Clarissa Matthews Lyle passed from this realm on August 16, 2023. His legacy includes daughters Megan Lyle, Jean Lyle Lepard and Judy (John) Lyle Harnois; and grandchildren Kevin Harnois, Clara Lepard, and Amy Harnois. His wife Mary predeceased him in June, a week after their 65th anniversary.
Jim was raised on the farm on which he’d been born, attending a one-room schoolhouse through his elementary grades. He was promoted early and skipped a grade to join the older children. The family moved briefly to Portland, OR, before returning to Michigan where Jim graduated from Waterford High School. He attended Wayne State University where he met his future wife, Mary Coedy, in botany class. Jim graduated from University of Michigan Dental School in 1958 and they were married on June 7.
His career began with a dental practice in Detroit which later moved to Dearborn, Livonia, and then Plymouth. The family moved to Southfield in 1968 where Jim enjoyed participating in local Gilbert and Sullivan operettas with Mary and the girls. His home garden was his pride and joy, and Jim also had a vegetable plot at the Southfield community garden. After retiring from dentistry, Jim had a second career educating future doctors as a standardized patient for the medical schools of William Beaumont, Oakland University, Wayne State, and Michigan State University. Florida and cruises were amongst his favorite vacations and at home he attended pre-dawn Bikram (hot) yoga classes. An avid reader and crossword puzzler, Jim was also fond of long walks and enjoyed skiing with friends. He had a sly sense of humor and an uncanny ability to make friends wherever he went.
The family wishes to thank the teams at Angela Hospice and St. Annes’ Mead for their dedicated care.
